We are so delighted to have Mr. Hanafi Bin Basri who graduated with BEng in Mechatronics from IIUM and currently holds a position as Principle Mechanical Static Unfried at PETRONAS. The wonderful sharing allows Mechanical Engineering students to widen their eyesight and have a clear viewpoint for further career path!

The committee bonding was held physically in The Cube and it involved a variety of games that were designed to help to build a sense of camaraderie between committees. After the games were over, committees sat down and discuss their progress and upcoming planning together. Overall, the bonding activity was a success.

In conjunction with the first week of the semester, IMechE UM Student Chapter has organised the IMechE Day 3.0, where we welcome our juniors, second-year and third-year students. We are fortunate to be joined by Mr Azimsyazwan Jaffar of GSE-M as our Keynote speaker to talk on the world of Mechanical Engineering. In addition to the engaging talk, we hope the Quiz sessions is fun and every students enjoy it!

IMechE UM, in collaboration with IMechE APU, held a Merdeka themed interactive session on 29th August 2021. The bonding session held on a Sunday afternoon was an interactive, fun and relaxed session. The committee from IMechE UM, as well as  IMechE APU, worked together to make this session successful. In this interactive session, we play some exciting and engaging games, and a link is formed between IMechE UM and  IMechE APU. We are looking forward to more collaborations with IMechE APU!

IMechE UM has partnered up with Vale Minerals Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. to organize a Job Interview Workshop on 27th March 2021. Our speaker, Ms. Ros, taught us how the HR evaluate resumes by doing a resume evaluation on the resumes submitted by our participants before the event. She gave useful tips and pointers on how we should make resumes which can attract HR’s attention. During the interview session, we underwent 2 mock interviews with 2 volunteers. They were interviewed by our speaker and Mr. Faizal from Vale. This is to demonstrate how a real job interview looks like. Ms. Ros also pointed out the strength and weaknesses of each volunteers which is very eye-opening to us. In the Q & A session, Ms. Ros answered the questions asked by our participants honestly and shared her experience both as an interviewer and interviewee.

IMechE UM has partnered up with VALE Malaysia Minerals SDN. BHD. to organize an informal forum session which named as Not-So-Late Night Show on 16 December 2020. The topic of the informal forum is Women In STEM. Our speaker, Ms Mujan Reena Talla was the Regional Head of Human Resources APACEME for VALE Minerals. On this forum, Ms Mujan Reena Talla would share about her experiences and some tips on how she succeeds in STEM career although she is a woman.

IMechE UM has partnered up with Dyson to organize an Industrial Webinar on 9 December 2020. Our first speaker, Mr Kent Lee, presented on the topic “Breaking through the Cyclone: Engineering transformation from cyclonic force to the technology in the palm of your hand”. He talked about how Dyson designed their infamous vacuum cleaner and also the process they have to undergo before bringing it to the market. Next, Ms Grace gave us some information on the James Dyson Award and encouraged students to join it. Lastly, Ms Theresa presented on the career opportunities in Dyson such as internship and jobs for fresh graduates.

IMechE UM has partnered up with Top Glove Corporation BHD to organize an Industrial Webinar + Visit on 18th November 2020. Our first speaker, Ms Noor Syamiza, talked about Top Glove’s company overview and how Top Glove started. She also played a video which is the virtual industrial visit to show around the facilities in Top Glove. Next, Mr Addison presented o his topic ‘Engineering in Top Glove’. He provided insights on which divisions are the engineers are involved in and also briefed us on the personalities which interns or workers should have to be a good engineer. Lastly, Mr Ang presented on his topic ‘Is What You Learnt Applicable in Top Glove?’. He showed us the different pumps used in Top Glove and how engineers can apply their knowledge such as Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics in their work.

Social Media Challenge was an activity for the Mechanical Engineering students from University of Malaya to gain insight on the Departmental of Mechanical Engineering activities. This is the first competition hosted by IMechE UM for this semester. Social Media Challenge have two topic which the participants are required to submit two different post based on the two different themes. The evaluation of this competition is based on the total likes acquired by participants post on IMechE official Facebook page.. This competition starts at 19/10/2020 and end at 6/11/2020.

IMechE UM has partnered up with KVC Industrial Supplies SDN BHD to organize a Resume & LinkedIn Workshop on the topic “Kick start your career! Creating your future profile!” on 4 November 2020. Our speaker is Mr Chua Wooi Kien who is Talent Section Manager in the Talent Management Department in his company. He has experiences in Human Resources and specialises in Talent Attraction & Acquisition, Employer Branding and Employee Engagement. In this workshop, Mr. Chua shared about his experiences working as a Talent Section Manager to the students in order to have a better understanding on the working environment in KVC Industrial Supplies SDN BHD. Besides, he also shared some tips when it comes to preparing a resume or CV as well as some answering skills when attending an interview. Moreover, Mr. Chua taught the students on how they can create a professional LinkedIn profile

IMechE UM has partnered up with NXP Semiconductors Malaysia organize an industrial webinar on the topic “Semiconductor Packaging for Autonomous Driving" on 24 October 2020. Our speaker is Dr Eu Poh Leng who is the Director of External Package Innovation of NXP Semiconductors Malaysia. In this webinar, Dr Eu shared her experiences and knowledge in the semiconductor industry. For instance, Dr Eu explained on the business opportunities in semiconductor industry, vehicle architectural resolution, and some automotive parts in the autonomous vehicles which requires the use of semiconductors.

IMechE Day was an activity for the Mechanical Engineering students from University of Malaya to gain insight on the Departmental of Mechanical Engineering. Four special guests were invited to the forum session which they were Mr Fauzi from Petronas, Mr Hassan from MISC, Mr Hazlan from Proton and Mr Faizal from Vale. It was an interactive session as most of the students asked questions regarding their stories and background as UM mechanical engineering alumni and engineers. There were also mentor mentee sessions where students from different years interacted with each other by playing games and having discussions on the event theme, ‘Engineer the Future’. Kahoot session and lucky draw session were also held where students get to win prizes.

A speaker from KVC was invited to conduct the technical talk about the field and the networking between engineering professionals in the industry. The speaker has remarkably wide experience in the working industry and was able to deliver clear explanation and useful knowledge to the participants. The session went really well and was given good feedback from the participants.

The National Space Agency abbreviated ANGKASA, is the national space agency of Malaysia. It was established in 2002 and its charter includes aims to upgrade, stimulate and foster the country's space programme through integrated and coordinated efforts by developing and applying space technologies. On March 4, 2019, it was announced by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin, that this agency has been merged with the Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency (MRSA) and renamed the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) for greater synergy. The initiative of MYSA is to ensure the development and management of the national space sector in a strategic, organised and comprehensive manner.

Through this visit, participants are able to learn in depth what Angkasa do. Participants were given a chance to explore and visit  Satellite Assembly, Integration and Test Facility (AIT) where spacecraft are being tested. Participants were able to experience how its like to work in Angkasa with wearing cleanroom suits. Moreover, Angkasa arranged a session for working employees to share their experience working in the company for participants to get to know more about the company.

A student from University of Malaya who is expert in Photoshop was invited to conduct the workshop using Adobe Photoshop Software. Loh Ee Sam is a student from the Biomedical Engineering Department and has great experience using the software. A session was arranged to assist members to install the Adobe Photoshop Software before conducting the workshop.

Loh Ee Sam provided clear explanation on what Adope Photoshop Software can assist engineers while performing their task and had a session teaching members step by step on how to do and command a specific function.

Members get the chance to learn more about the manufacturing line and how a factory in IKA Works Asia Sdn. Bhd works.

The IMechE YMS inter-varsity debate competition is a competition whereby the students from all universities in Malaysia will debate on the topics related to engineering. This debate competition provides a good platform for the students to put forward their opinions and viewpoints regarding the engineering topics professionally and at the same time strengthen the relationship between Student Chapters in Malaysia. This is also a great opportunity to spread the word of IMechE Malaysia to other universities which has yet to form a student chapter.

The proposed debate competition helps participants to develop essential critical thinking skills where they are encouraged to analyse complex issues of engineering ethics and technical knowledge from the engineering field. Furthermore, it teaches them to boost their confidence and make them bold enough to speak in any situation without any hesitation. A debate team would not only instil teamwork among the students but will also aid in improving their communication skills.

By organizing the debate competition, IMechE University of Malaya (UM) and the co-organizer IMechE Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) aim to provide a platform for all students to enhance their critical and analytical skills. It would also enable participants to build up confidence to speak up and develop effective speech composition and delivery.
